Wisconsin River on a Frosty Morning – Prairie du Sac, WI Photographer

This is how the world three blocks from our house looked this morning. Normally we just drive by it without paying much attention. Today (even though it was close to zero F) I decided to stop and just look. I need to do this more often :-)

So Good You Could Eat Them – Local Gifts – Sauk City, WI Photographer

Being a small and local business myself, I do my best to support other small businesses and local entreprenuers. And one that I always recommend — as I strongly believe in everything that she does — is our Roots and Shoots CSA farm owner Heidi Accola. In December the growing season in Wisconsin is obviously over but with gift giving time upon us I would like to share with you some other products that Heidi creates in her kitchen (and I photographed them in mine yesterday :-) ) Here they are – handmade soaps:

All Heidi’s soaps and balms feature organic herbs and additives and are gentle on the skin. They are also colored and scented with natural colorants and essential oils. Here are just a few of the yummy ingredients: pure olive oil, beeswax, goat’s milk, carrot juice, oats, egg yolks, cucumbers, pumpkin, sweet potato, lemon, mint, coffee, chocolate… All so good you could it it :-) And they smell delicious, too!

These soaps and balms would make a beautiful gift for someone who appreciates local, organic, sustainable products. If you are interested in any of the above give Heidi a call at 608-643-5273.

Fall Colors, Captured – Sauk Prairie, WI Photographer

Leaves are all gone and the snow is right around the corner. I thought I would share with you a few images that I captured back in October. Here are some last beautiful Wisconsin fall colors, my barefoot hikers and mysterious berries we found while hiking. They looked tempting, delicious, juicy and very big (2in in diameter). However since we didn’t know what they are, we just left them on the tree. If you do know if these are edible, please share and I will tell you where to find them next year :-)

Wisconsin Winter – Prairie du Sac WI, Photographer

We are only in the middle of a Wisconsin winter, but it starts to feel like it’s been around too long already… After major Midwest blizzard seeming to prolong winter forever we decided to explore the countryside looking for beauty in the midst of our frozen land. And here is what we found…

Eagle Watching Days in Sauk Prairie – Prairie du Sac WI Photographer

Our small town turns into a very special place each winter, bald eagles from the north migrate to our undeveloped shoreline along the Wisconsin River. It’s pretty amazing how many returned this year. Hundreds of eagles spend the winter here, roosting in deep valleys nearby and fishing below a hydroelectric plant, whose turbines stun fish and make them easy pickings. Unfortunately, I don’t own a premium telephoto lens but even with my portrait one I was able to capture several of these majestic birds perching on their favorite trees. If you look closely you’ll be able to spot 5 or 6 eagles on each photo. We went eagle watching earlier this week and counted almost 28 in half an hour!!  This weekend are official Eagle Watching Days in Sauk Prairie, WI, so if you want to spot an eagle in their natural habitat I invite you to head our way to Sauk City and Prairie du Sac (and check out The Ferry Bluff Eagle Council website for a full schedule of events).

Sonia’s Heaven – Caring for the Stables at Christmas

“Down on nice Aunt Sandy’s farm…” (sung to the tune of Old McDonald) . . . yes our Christmas was filled with activities of a different kind. When Stuart’s sister suggested house sitting their new house  (to be near the rest of our big family and host the Christmas meal) – the offer came with chores.  Sandy and Jeff have a hobby farm they built from scratch: 2 horses, 1 miniature horse,  1 donkey, 4 sheep, 8 chickens, 6 ducks, a rabbit, 3 indoor cats (and 4+ outdoor ones), 3 dogs and more… We now have new respect for the life that Sandy leads.

The kids did all the chores, attempting to get up at 6 am each day.  They were in their element. But waking up so early every day was new to the kids.  However if they were not up the mule would bray,  the horses kick the walls and the dogs bark. Cousins joined in with playtime, sleepovers, and helping with the chores. Since some supervision was required — the parents are exhausted! But it was fun.

Winter Arrived – Prairie du Sac WI Photographer

Winter is here, to stay, for good, if you like it or not… So I choose to like it :-) With the first snow last weekend the kids were all excited to go sledding. So we bundled up and headed to Indian Lake Park. We had a sledding hill all for ourselves and enjoyed it fully. The next stop was The Tree Farm nearby, where we found one perfect Christmas tree for our home.  I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw flowers all covered with snow but still blooming with color. Nature is amazing. It’s been snowing today again. I guess all that snow and cold  is a good excuse to bake some cookies, sit by the pellet stove and enjoy them with hot tea  :-)

Willy Street Fair and Parade – Madison WI photographer

Yesterday we attended Madison’s biggest and best street fair: The Willy Street Fair. Offering the best in music (with 6 stages of entertainment), food from around the world, hand made artwork and the coolest parade ever this was an event not be missed. If you did – put in now on your calendar for the next year :-) and in the meantime enjoy these images from the most colorful, eclectic and delightful parade in town.

Polka on the Riverway – Prairie du Sac Photographer

I have just finished making final touches to my first window display in downtown Prairie du Sac, WI. A  Sauk Prairie Chamber of Commerce initiative enabled local business owners — who do not have a retail space — to showcase their art and services. Tomorrow is the first big day – with an annual event – Polka on the Riverway. More than 1500 people are expected to come to downtown Prairie du Sac. If you are in the area, please visit my window display (and more inside) in Eagle View building on Water Street.  Hope to see you there!

Metamorphosis – Prairie du Sac, WI Photographer

Every summer we find black swallowtail caterpillars in our garden. Each year they choose one kind of plant, either parsley or dill or carrot leaves to munch on. And each year my kids pick them up, bring them home and turn them into our summer pets. It’s amazing to watch how much they eat and how quickly they grow. Usually within less than a month we have colorful butterflies. They are so full of energy and fly out so quickly,  I was lucky to capture just one after his (or her :) metamorphosis.

This is how they looked four days later...

And here is the one that I was able to capture after her transformation

Who knows maybe next year we'll take care of her babies...
