What To Wear For Senior Pictures – Senior Photography Madison WI

It’s senior session season! So today I’d like to share with you my 10 tips about what to wear for senior pictures so that you look and feel your best. Hopefully these suggestions will help you get ready and you’ll have some awesome shots to share with the world.

Tip # 1.  BE YOU

Whatever you decide to bring make sure that you love the way you look in your outfits and feel comfortable and confident in all of them. When you feel great you will photograph great. Select clothes that show your style, and reflect your personality as well as who you are now. You’ll have your senior session only once in your life so take time to plan. It’s better to start thinking and pre-planing your outfits for your senior portraits well in advance, not the day of the session 🙂

Tip # 2.  THINK VARIETY

Bring several outfits that represent a variety of styles and colors: something timeless, something trendy, something casual and something more formal. Select colors that you feel and look great in and that compliment your skin tone as well as different backgrounds. A range of different looks will give you more options to choose from after the session and your photos won’t look all the same.

Tip # 3.  BRING OUT YOUR BEST FEATURES

We all have something we love or dislike about the way we look. Make sure to select wardrobe that fits well, looks flattering and focuses attention on your best features. Keep in mind that in general longer pants and sleeves photograph much better than sleeveless tops or shorts. Your arms will be prominent in your photos so consider covering them up if there is something you don’t love about them. Very short miniskirts or dresses will limit your poses. Very loose or baggy clothes look very unflattering on camera almost on everybody. More fitting dresses and shirts are always a better choice.

Tip # 4.  COLOR COUNTS

Solid colors that complement your skin tone or make your eyes pop photograph best. Busy patterns, graphic lettering or stripes will play tricks on the eye and distract from your face. Coordinate outfit colors with different backgrounds. Don’t wear green outfit in the woods in the summer or gray in urban settings. Try to avoid only white (sometimes it may drain the color out of your face) or only black.

Tip # 5.  SHOES

Shoes will make your outfit even though they won’t be visible in most of your photos. Remember to coordinate from top to bottom in case your feet will show in some poses. Pay attention to the color of your socks. White socks with black shoes or white tennis shoes with formal pants can leave you disappointed later.

Tip # 6.  ACCESSORIZE

Accessories bring out your personality and can be lots of fun. Get creative and consider bringing scarves, belts, earrings, necklaces, fun socks, boots, hats. We won’t use them all for one outfit but featuring one or two pieces may perfectly finish the look.

Tip # 7.  LAYER UP

Layers photograph beautifully. Especially layers with texture like knits or lace really stand out and create a captivating picture. So bring cardigans, vests, jackets, they’ll will help you quickly create a new look just by adding or removing one piece.

Tip # 8.  BRING EXTRA STUFF

It’s OK if you have more outfits than you think you’d need. We may not use them all but it’s better to have more options than less. Together we’ll figure out the best clothing choices for each location.

Tip # 9.  TRY IT ON

Try all your outfits in front of a mirror before the shoot and make sure you love everything about the way you look and that you feel comfortable in different poses. Sometimes the clothing might look great on you when you just stand there, but if you do certain poses it might not be as flattering.

Tip # 10.  IRON YOUR CLOTHES

To look your best make sure everything is clean and pressed. Wrinkled clothes don’t photograph well and make you look sloppy, so iron everything that needs ironing. To make it easy to remember what top goes with what bottom, group your outfits – including accessories – together on hangers. Never stuff them in a bag!
