Road Trip to Joshua Tree National Park

Last month we had a chance to escape Wisconsin winter and warm up a little in sunny Nevada and California. I LOVE road trips and exploring new places, so that one week  was packed to the fullest. We flew in to Vegas but didn’t spend much time there and instead took back roads to California, one of them was historic Route 66…

Our destination was Joshua Tree National Park. This park is part of Mojave Desert, which is the only place on earth where Joshua tress grow. This was my first time to see so many of them in one place and the first impression was stunning! It seemed that between the mountains, the jumble of stacked boulders and the thin “forest” of odd Joshua trees, the only thing that was missing were dinosaurs! It was so easy to imagine some roaming around…

Can you see tiny climbers? The rock piles were so inviting to climb!

Here is the road to Keys  View, which is supposed to be one of the best spots at the park to admire sunset. There was no sunset on the day when we were there but the vast view was indeed stunning.

The eastern part of the park lies within the Colorado Desert. And in Cholla Cactus Garden you can see one of the most distinctive cacti in Joshua Tree National Park. They’re also called jumping cholla or teddy bear cholla. They’re cute, but I wouldn’t recommend cuddling with them!

On the way back to Vegas we noticed the signs pointing to Calico Ghost Town so of course we had to make a stop there. The timing couldn’t be better! We arrived just in time for the golden hour. The whole town was flooded with beautiful warm light, perfect for photos and there were not many tourists. It had a real feel of a ghost town!
